Aswan high dam
When you look at the map of the Nile valley carefully, there are many dams that can be seen but the most important is the Aswan High dam in Egypt.
This dam stores water from the Nile and it is later distributed to the farmlands.
This dam was built at Aswan as early as 1902, with main aim of storing water for irrigation during the dry season.
The dam has been expanded several times until the biggest called Aswan High dam was constructed 8 kilometres north of the original Aswan.
It is one of the largest dams in the world, and extends across the Nile Valley for 4 kilometres.
The lake created is Lake Nasser, named after the revolutionary leader and president who died in 1970. The lake is 500 kilometres long and extends southwards 150 km into Sudan.
The dam has twelve giant turbines whose generators can produce 2100 megawatts of power. The dam was completed in 1970.
