4. (a) The economic activity taking place is fishing as evidenced by: Man holding fish that have already been caught. Net laid across the river / stream / wetland to trap fish.

Man holding a spear or sharp ended stick to pierce or catch any fish in sight.

(b) Factors which have favoured the economic activity include

Presence of a river / stream / water body / wet land which or a habitat for fish.
Availability of fish in the water.
Availability of some capital for purchase of nets, spears, floats etc.
Existence of labour to do the fishing. Availability of fish food or planktons.
Easy accessibility of the fishing ground since the vegetation in the foreground is not as dense as that in the background.
No strong current of water i.e. slow moving water.
Method is favoured by the shallowness of the water.
Availability of consumers or available market.
Favourable government policy
Limited alternative sources of income as there are no other economic activities shown on the photograph and the vegetation in the background is a reflection of water logged / poor soil environment.

(c) (i) Problems faced by the people carrying out the activity.

Poor fishing equipment / poor fishing methods i.e. a net trap and spear / stick are the basic tools.
Lack of adequate capital.
Low fish population / catch e.g. only two fish are displayed.
Risks related to water borne diseases; water snakes; predators, etc i.e.
occupational harzards.
Shallow waters which restrict the use of modern methods or modern fishing gear e.g. motor boats, trawlers etc.
Limited market
Poor transport and communication i.e. no trace pf roads.
Lack of proper landing site. etc.

(ii) Steps that should be taken to improve the economic activity.

Construction of fish ponds in the neighbourhood using the water supply available i.e. fish farming.
Construction of landing sites.
Dredging of the river / stream to increase its depth and breadth to allow the use of modern fishing gear.
Construction of roads or communication lines.
Market research / looking for market.
Having reliable preservation methods.
Controlled, fishing.
Encouraging foreign investment.
A removal of the water weeds.
Plus any other valid solution connected to fishing problem in. general.

(d) The area in E. Africa chosen should be with:

Rivers/streams/wetlands etc. found in flat lowlying areas.
Communities which are greatly dependent on fishing using crude methods.
Rivers / streams / wetlands which are shallow Examples: L. Kyoga, L. Albert, L. Victoria, L. George and Edwards shores etc.
