PREFACE
New chapters or sections have been added on the chemistry of living organisms, water balance and osmoregulation, the liver, support and locomotion, mitosis and meiosis, birth control, practical ecology, microbes and man, agricultural productivity, and man and the tropical environment. The chapter on heredity and variation has been considerably extended and brought up to date.
While preparing this edition I visited a variety of schools in Uganda, and studied the needs of students who use Companion Biology. This made me to present this book in a simple language and with clear diagrams, the increased provision of summaries and the division of the text into self-contained units of a convenient length for students to study. Samples of Essay Questions for section C, structured and multiple-choice questions have been added at the end of each chapter.
It's the study of living things - how they live; hew they grow; how they reproduce; how they interact with one another; how they interact with their surroundings:
Most of us are curious about the living things that share the earth with us. And it's fun satisl5ring that curiosity. Hence Biology is for everyone.
This Biology Workbook provides a comprehensive Revision guide to Ordinary Level Biology Syllabus. It is designed to meet the needs of not only the Candidates but also the Students in the Lower Forms. The language used has been simplified and kept as simple as possible for easy comprehension. The author has, however, been careful not to sacrifice content at the level of the questions for simplicity.
As the method of arriving at the solutions to the questions posed is considered very vital, the Suggested Answer Plans have been made as detailed as possible.
This book should also be used throughout the Course, to help students when revising for Internal and External Examinations. It should help Students familiarize themselves with the Standard Examination Questions in UCE Biology Paper I. Besides, it should help in the development of examination approach techniques.
May God bless you.
