Interpretation of Economic Activities

The following evidence can be used to interpretation economic activities  carried  out on a given area on the map extract.

 1.   Agricultural   activities

Arable  farming

a)   Factories for agricultural  products for example ginneries for cotton, jaggery works for sugarcanes, hullers  for coffee, mills for maize, bakeries for wheat among others.

b)   Plantation/estates like sugar canes , tea coffee, wattle, palm etc.

c)   Where there is rural settlement with no evident  major activity.

 (ii)        Animal farming (pastoralism)

  • Grassland areas with scatted clusters of dwellings.
  • Veterinary installations, cattle dips, cattle and quarantine camps, water pumps etc.
  • Water pans, water holes, valley dams and bore holes
  • Creameries, milk collection centres.

2.   Fishing

  • Settlement near water bodies fishing villages and landing sites
  • Fish ponds for fish farming
  • Fish traps.

 

3.   Trading. The evidence as follows.

  • Trading centre (TC)
  • Markets (mkts)
  • Built up areas
  • Ports and railway stations.

 

4.   Manufacturing.

Evidence is:

  • Factories
  • Ginneries (milk)
  • Creameries (cotton)
  • Hulluries (coffee)

 

5.   Mining /quarrying.

Evidences

  • roasting and dressing plants
  • rockout crops
  • quarries
  • pick and shavel sign

 

6.   Forestry.

Evidence: Forests /forest reserves

 

7.   Lumbering.

Evidence:

  • The presence of saw mills
  • Roads leading to the forested.

 

8.   Tourism.

Evidence:

  • Landscape /physical features such as:
  • Valleys, caves, lakes, rivers, waterfalls
  • Beaches
  • Antiquities
  • Picnic and camping sites
  • Rest houses/hotels and motels etc.

 

9.   Local craft industries.

Evidence

  • Permanent swamps with papyrus marsh and bog
  • Palms tree.

 

10. Transport

  • Airfield
  • Roads
  • Railway line
  • Ferry line.

 

Interpreting    Problems

1.   The presence of swamps is an indicator of the following problems:

  • Seasonal flooding
  • Water born diseases e.g Bilharzia
  • Presence of wild animals for example wild animals like crocodiles and hippos.
  • Presence of mosquitoes, water snails etc
  • Hindrance to the construction of transport routes.

 

2.   The presence of very many boreholes is an indicators unreliable rain fall and scarcity of water.

 

3.   The presence of steep slopes may indicate the following:

  • Soil erosion
  • Landslides
  • Difficulty in agricultural mechanization
  • Difficulty in constructing transport routes.

 

4.   The presence of nucleated settlement is an indicator of the following  problems

  • Poor sanitation
  • High crime rates
  • Shortage of land
  • Disease out break e.g cholera due to poor sanitation
  • Cases of robbery

 

5.   The presence of very many police posts is an indicator of high crime rate and insecurity

 

6.   The presence of very many foot pattern and hurts it is an indicator of poverty and poor infrastructure.

 

7.   The presence of forests may be an indicator  of the following  problems

  • Presence of wild animals that may destroy man and his crops e.g. lions and monkeys.
  • Hindrance to transport routes
  • Hiding places for wrong doers like rebels, thieves etc.
