Strategies for agriculture
In East Africa, over 60% of the population has long been dependent on agriculture over 50% of the GDP has been attributed to the sector. With numerous hinderance industrialization, there is need for continued dependence on agriculture for son and therefore, the need to adopt an appropriate strategy.
Improvement approach. This is a long-term and gradual development strategy at changing the farmer from a traditional one to a modern one. The strategy in introducing and improving on what can be adopted by the farmer through:
Changing the present land tenure for the better.
Developing the community by introducing what can improve the existing farm conditions i.e. introduction of new production techniques with time. Increasing agricultural output by introduction and use of simple machinery ox-plough, and tractors.
Making use of progressive farmers as a focal point of interest to teach the rest modern farming techniques.
Initiating a widespread programme of extension services. Such services include assistance extended to individual farmers e.g.
- Removal of obstacles to agricultural modernization.
- Construction, repair and development of infrastructure like feeder roads.
- General improvement of marketing facilities.
- Giving possible and appropriate advice to farmers.
- Extension and provision of credit facilities such as loans.
- Raising awareness through campaign (agricultural propaganda) on radios, newspapers and magazines.
- Organising village meetings with a primary focus on agriculture.
- Through research, introduce and develop new breeds and varieties and make them available to farmers.
- Provision of subsidised inputs like fertilizers and pesticides to farmers.
- Making regular scheduled visits by agricultural experts.
- Conducting courses (seminars and workshops) on agricultural improvement.
5. Diversification i.e. introduction of several crop varieties and livestock.
6. Minimizing use of foreign exchange on food and other agricultural products.
7. Introduction of micro-planning in agriculture.
