We notice the following kinds of sacrifice offered:
The holocaust, or
burnt-offering, in which the sacrifice was entirely burnt and therefore entirely
removed from human possession and given back to God.
The sin-offering, to
take way the sin of the priest and the people.
The communion sacrifice, or
fellowship-offering, in which part of the meat was eaten by the people, after
part (the best meat, consisting of the fatty parts and the blood) had been
burnt on the altar for God.
The grain-offering, which
could be made in several forms, as unbaked flour mixed with oil, or baked
unleavened bread, or parched corn. Leviticus 24: 5-9 refers to the 'shewbread',
twelve loaves laid out before -the Ark and renewed every Sabbath day.
This passage does not
describe the incense-offering. The incense used to make a sweet smell before
God is described in Exodus 30: 34-38. A theophany, indicating the acceptance by
God of the sacrifices offered by Aaron is described in 9: 22- 24.
