In 2 Samuel 6: 1-15, the
account is given of how David had the Ark of the Covenant brought to Jerusalem,
thereby establishing Jerusalem as the central sanctuary of God in Israel. We
have not heard of the whereabouts of the Ark since the time of Samuel, after it
had been first captured by the Philistines and then returned by them, to a
place called Kiriath J earim. It is indicated in 2 Samuel 6: 2 that David and a
great procession of his men went to a place called Baalah in Judah (or
Baale-judah) also identified in Joshua 15: 9 as Kiriath Jearim. The Ark which
had been kept there was taken out with honour and rejoicing but the journey of
seven miles to Jerusalem proved eventful.
