Causes of the war


Failure to organize elections in a period of 8 years left people with use of force as the only solution.
 
There was a high rate of moral degeneration. Since regime to power through violence, it went a head to promote in the country.
 
The regime had removed the rule of law, lowered the power of the judiciary and police.
 
Making Uganda an Islamic state by discriminating Christians. The regime was forcefully making Uganda an Islamic state
 
The collapse of internal and international trade.
 
The immediate cause of the war was the invasion of the Kagera salient a part of Tanzania, by Amin's forces in October 1978.
 
Amin's regime had become so unpopular both at home and abroad for the killing of thousands of its citizens. It is estimated that the regime could have killed about 500,000 people.
 
Military torture, arbitrary arrests and detention without trial under inhuman conditions were the order of the day.
 
 
The exiles and Ugandans within the country were angered by the regime's destruction of the economy by expelling Asians in 1972.
 
There were no industrial products produced in Uganda and shortage of consumer goods caused general misery.
 
Cost of living was high and so was inflation. Wages and salaries became worthless.
 
Social services such as education and health had declined and people had to meet their high costs by themselves.
 
Corruption, tribalism, nepotism practiced by Amin and his supporters.
 
Amin's government had suppressed the peoples' civic rights.
