Effects of Neo-colonialism

Neo colonialism is indirect and diplomatic, but its effects are clear. According to Walter Rodney, the colonial masters left Africa using the front door but came back using the back door.

Market dependence on foreigners which therefore leads to unfavourable prices

Encouragement of the economy of enclaves in the name of industries and yet they are just finishing and processing plants. Secondary industries are discouraged and only primary ones are allowed.

Neo colonialism has ensured the Maintenance of theoretical education so that Africans remain the importers of skilled labour from Europe and America.

The encouragement of economic integration with more developed countries like EEC/ACP, and the commonwealth states. This makes the third world countries to be perpetual suppliers of raw materials and importers of manufactured goods from the developed countries.

The encouragement of outdated and inappropriate technology in Africa such that when those machines develop any mechanical problem we have to wait for spare parts from either England, Japan, US or Germany.

Loan dependence and its negative effects such as forcing developing countries to do what developed countries want by attaching conditions to aid like adopt multi-party system or no aid. It has also promoted a wide foreign debt.

Supply of substandard goods and services from the developed countries to the less developed ones.

Field Marshal Mobutu Seseko of DR Congo was praised and supported by Western powers

It leads to the creation of puppet states or governments led by stooges with fabricated elections based on comprador policies. These leaders are meant to serve the interests of developed countries.

Foreign motivated coups in Africa, which have toppled patriots, nationalists and more revolutionary who were struggling for Africa's development. For example Ghana in 1966, Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown, Patrice Lumumba of Zaire was toppled after serving for a few weeks.

Divide and rule policy on Africans. This has resulted into interstate conflicts, insecurity and armed conflicts supported by neighbouring countries.

Existence of military functionaries to safeguard the neo colonial interests.

The neo colonial powers threaten the existence of African continental organizations for example the OAU. In 1982, the Tripoli conference bogged down because America did not support Gaddafi' s government.

Perpetual balkanization (division) of African states by giving support to the rebels for example the UNITA in Angola, supported by America, the SPLA of Col. John Garanga in Sudan.

Is this Cultural degradation?

Neo colonialism has led to cultural degradation in Africa. The creation of white women and men in black skins through social conquests like western education, western dialects, pornography, Western Music dress, colour, hair make and foreign religions. We are seeing it come by through a crippling cultural and personality identity crises stoked with poverty, superstition, bureaucrat terrorism as modes of intellectual thought of the day. Few if any Negro African today knows his cultural foundations nor is aware of his ancestral intellectual traditions. He does know his beginning because it has been erased with a chemical duster of amnesia, but most shockingly, believes he knows his cultural roots and intellectual end as he points to the North Trans Atlantic, in a false belief that he is pointing to "Mecca and Jerusalem." First it was by force that it became voluntary, but now it is voluntary in retrospect for a formidable force to follow.

Dangerous foreign social behaviours have been introduced in Africa such as homosexual, lesbianism and prostitution as well as the almost naked dress code among others have all set in to derail the old good African culture. It is on record there are donors who funding homosexuals and lesbianists in Africa to the extent of attracting brilliant people to advocate for such practices as peoples' rights.

Poor leadership manifested in parliaments! Do we blame it on neocolonialism?

The elite mass gap is widening with more exploitation on the peasants.

Discouragement of Africans to take off especially in the areas of African local industry, medicine and trade.

Through neo colonialism, African countries have adopted capitalism as an ideology for economic and social development. Consequently, privatization and liberalization are sweeping across Africa.

Loss of independence. The hard won independence has been lost since African countries cannot make independent decisions. African countries therefore only obtained flag independence.

Exploitation of Africa. Neo colonialism has ensured the continued exploitation of Africa by big powers. This has been done through profit repatriation by multi lateral corporations and expatriates and through charging high interest rates.

Africa's great leaders like Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Abubaker Tafawa Balewa of Nigeria, Steven Siaka of Sierraleone and Milton Obote of Uganda were forcefully overthrown by their army officers with the support of superpowers.

The failure of the Non-aligned movement. Neo colonialism made it impossible for Africans to remain neutral. Due to the desire for economic aid, they have become aligned to the rich big powers.

It has promoted divisions amongst African countries. This has partly been due to attachment by Africans to either Anglophone or Franca-phone groups.

Supporting killers and destroyers of Africa in power

It has hindered economic co-operation. Organizations aimed at promoting regional economic integration e.g. the E.A.C, P.T.A and ECOWAS have been adversely influenced and weakened by big powers, which wish to continue dominating African markets.

Continued political instabilities in form of coup-de-tats, rigging of votes, civil wars and assassinations. These are due to the desire by former colonial masters to maintain influence in Africa.

Such bandits have been maintained in the Bush as ‘rebels' with aid from developed countries.

Defective production in Africa. African states have continued producing what they do not consume and consuming what they do not produce. All this favours big powers.

Dependence syndrome. African countries have been put in a situation of continuous beggary. They think in terms of requesting for loans and grants instead of accumulating local capital.

Economic indebtedness. Neo colonialism has made African countries to accumulate heavy debts with no hope of ever being able to repay them. This signifies that there is no economic independence in Africa.

Scientific and technological set back. Before colonial rule, Africans had developed some innovations for example Iron smelting, backcloth manufacture, fish smoking, ding processing etc. But both colonialism and neo-colonialism have rendered Africans "impotent" in terms of new discoveries. Those who make discoveries are persecuted.

Brain drain. Africa's best brainworkers move to richer countries voluntarily in search for greener pastures. Those who persist to make inventions in Africa are either sabotaged or are bought to work for them.

New social classes have been created in Africa. There is the selfish and rich, ruling class against the poor peasants who are only good for vote.

Foreign languages have remained the official languages in Africa.
